SafeHomeFirst Editorial
If you’re investing in a premium walk-in bath in 2026, your research will almost certainly come down to two brands: Kohler and American Standard. Both are legacy plumbing manufacturers with century-old reputations. Both offer national installation networks. Both build products that are lightyears ahead of the basic fiberglass tubs you see in late-night TV commercials.
But they are not the same product, and they are not built for the same buyer. We’ve analyzed both lineups, spoken with installers, and compared the specifications to help you decide which is right for your home.
The Short Version
Choose Kohler if: You want the absolute best design, the most advanced hydrotherapy features (like heated surfaces that warm before you get in), and you’re willing to pay a premium for a product that looks like a high-end spa rather than a medical device.
Choose American Standard if: You need a very specific size or configuration (they offer dozens of models), you want excellent value for the features provided, and you prioritize functional reliability over high-end aesthetics.
Design and Aesthetics
This is where the two brands diverge most sharply.
Kohler has spent the last five years aggressively redesigning their walk-in baths to eliminate the “medical” look. The lines are clean, the acrylic is premium, and the hardware matches their high-end residential fixtures. A Kohler walk-in bath looks like a deliberate design choice in a luxury bathroom.
American Standard takes a more traditional approach. Their tubs are well-built and functional, but they look exactly like what they are: walk-in tubs. The styling is slightly more utilitarian, which is fine for many buyers, but it lacks the seamless integration of the Kohler models.
Hydrotherapy and Features
Both brands offer excellent hydrotherapy, but Kohler’s implementation is more advanced.
Kohler’s BubbleMassage System is the industry standard. It features up to 100 air jets that create a full-body effervescent experience. But Kohler’s real advantage is their Bask heated surface technology. The seat, backrest, and floor are heated, keeping you warm while the tub fills and drains. This solves the single biggest complaint people have about walk-in baths: sitting in a cold tub waiting for water.
American Standard offers excellent targeted whirlpool jets and air systems, but their heating options are generally limited to the seat and backrest on select premium models. They do, however, offer an excellent Quick Drain system that empties the tub in under two minutes, which is competitive with Kohler’s fast-drain technology.
Installation and Warranty
Both brands shine here compared to smaller competitors.
Both Kohler and American Standard use networks of certified installers. This is critical. A walk-in bath requires plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work. If a general contractor installs it incorrectly, it can void the warranty. Using the brand’s certified network ensures the warranty remains intact.
Both brands offer Lifetime Limited Warranties on the tub shell and door seal. Kohler generally offers a more robust warranty on the pumps, motors, and electronic components (often lifetime for the original purchaser, compared to American Standard’s 10-15 years depending on the model).
Price Comparison
Pricing for both brands varies wildly based on features and the complexity of your installation (plumbing upgrades, electrical work, etc.). However, as a general rule:
- American Standard: Typically ranges from $8,000 to $18,000 fully installed.
- Kohler: Typically ranges from $12,000 to $25,000 fully installed.
You pay a premium for Kohler’s design, heated surfaces, and brand cachet. For many buyers, that premium is worth it. For others, American Standard offers 90% of the functionality for 70% of the price.
The Verdict
If budget is your primary concern but you still want a reliable, brand-name product with a strong warranty, American Standard is the smart choice. It’s the workhorse of the premium category.
If you view this as a permanent upgrade to your forever home, and you want a spa-quality experience that doesn’t compromise the design of your bathroom, Kohler is the clear winner in 2026.
